Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions about playing 4-player team chess on 4chess.

What is 4-player chess?

4-player chess on 4chess is a team variant played on a standard 8×8 board. Two teams of two players each share an army: White is controlled by players W1 and W2, and Black by B1 and B2. Teams alternate turns and the goal is to checkmate an enemy King.

Is 4chess free to play?

Yes. The core game is completely free. You can play unlimited games, use Quick Match, create private rooms, and track your ratings without paying anything.

Do I need to download anything?

No. 4chess runs entirely in your web browser on both desktop and mobile devices. Just open the site and play.

Do I need an account?

You can play private games with friends without an account. To use Quick Match (skill-based matchmaking) and to track ratings, you'll need a free account. You can register with an email or log in with your Lichess account.

Why do I need to verify my email?

Email verification keeps the community fair and reduces spam and abuse. After registering, you'll receive a verification link by email. Once verified, you can use all features including Quick Match. Players who log in with Lichess are verified automatically.

How does the turn order work?

Players move one at a time in the fixed order W1 → B1 → W2 → B2, then the cycle repeats. Teammates never move twice in a row.

How does the clock work?

Each team shares a single clock. Your team's clock only counts down during your team's turns. If it runs out, your team loses on time. Time controls include Bullet (3 min), Blitz (5 min), Rapid (10–15 min), and Freestyle (no clock).

How are ratings calculated?

Ratings use an Elo-based system, tracked separately for each time control. New accounts start with a provisional rating shown as "?" until you've played enough games for the rating to stabilise.

Can I play with my friends?

Absolutely. Create a Private Room and share the room code or link with three friends. When all four seats are filled, the game begins.

What happens if someone disconnects?

The game pauses briefly to let the player reconnect. If they can't return, the match may be resolved in favour of the other team.

Can I capture my teammate's pieces?

Yes — in 4chess you may capture your own teammate's pieces if it helps the team's plan. This is a unique part of the team format.

What languages does 4chess support?

4chess is available in nine languages: English, Italian, Spanish, French, Chinese, Hindi, Bengali, Portuguese, and Russian.

Are there tournaments?

Yes. We host community tournaments, sometimes with real prizes. Keep an eye on the announcement banner and the Tournament page when you're logged in.
